Robberies, Violent Crime Surge in Georgetown

Disturbing spike in serious crimes.

The number of robberies and violent crime in Georgetown more than tripled in the first three months of 2014 compared to a year ago, and the number of thefts from cars has also increased.

Crime statistics from the Metropolitan Police Department show a disturbing spike in the crimes, though burglaries and thefts, excluding thefts from autos, were down from a year ago in the area, Public Service Area 206.

The first quarter shows 16 incidents of violent crime compared to five a year ago. That includes four robberies with a gun and one assault with a gun.

Property crime was also up, from 169 in 2013 to 180 this year, most of the increase attributed to theft fro auto, which more than doubled to 37 incidents in 2014.

One homicide was reported as was one case of arson. Neither crime had been reported in the first quarter of 2013.
