Rock Slide Blocks Eastbound Lane of Canal Road

The rain caused rocks to become dislodged from the adjacent property.

UPDATED 4:35 p.m.

A section of Canal Road that caused major traffic delays Thursday morning will likely remain closed into the evening rush hour. Canal Road is currently closed between Reservoir Road and Foxhall Road.

Crews are working to stabilize an adjacent hillside after heavy rains dislodged rocks and mud from an adjacent property above the lane, causing the minor rock slide.

This morning, John Lisle, a spokesman for the District of Columbia Department of Transportation, said clean-up crews, trucks and front-head loaders were on the scene of the mudslide. Crews continue to work to stabilize the National Park Service land.

According to a release from DDOT this afternoon, even once Canal Road reopens to traffic, the north side curb lane will remain closed. One lane will be available for outbound traffic between Foxhall Road and Clark Place this evening.

Drivers should expect delays Friday morning as DDOT anticipates there will only be one lane available for inbound traffic during rush hour.

Lisle is encouraging motorists to find alternate routes.
