Second District Experiences Slight Overall Crime Increase

Captain Jeffrey Herold gave the Second District Citizens Advisory Council an update on crime trends at the March 23 meeting.

Captain Jeffrey Herold told the Second District Citizens Advisory Council that overall crime was up by 13 percent over the past 30 days and by 11 percent in property crime in that same time. Georgetown's Police Service Area (PSA) 206 experienced a moderate crime increase; the driving force for the increase in the Second District average was from PSA 208, which was up 81 percent in overall crime over the past 30 days.

Herold said many of the increases in the Second District have been in burglaries and thefts. "And we’re having a problem with snatch-type robberies" involving i-Phones and purses he said.

PSA 206, which covers Georgetown, experienced a four percent increase in both property and total crime. There were no sexual assaults reported, which is down two from the previous month. However robberies increased from two to six over the previous month. Assaults with a dangerous weapon (ADW) decreased from four to two. Thefts from auto increased slightly from 13 to 14.

The meeting also gave the CAC a chance to recognize the "Officers of the Month." Officers Bryan Weingard and Brian Hungarter followed a car that had been reported stolen in a carjacking the previous day. The chase ended when the stolen car drove into a dead end. As the officers were about to get out to make arrests, the suspects threw the stolen car into reverse and slammed into the officers' car. However, Officers Weingard and Hungarter were unharmed and still able to make five arrests. They received certificates of merit from the CAC.
