Thefts from Autos See Spike in Second Police District

Police have deployed additional resources until arrests are made.

The DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD)'s Second District (2D), which includes Georgetown and Glover Park, has seen a spike in recent months in thefts from autos.

In the 30-day period between March 22 and May 21 thefts from autos increased by 39 percent compared to 2012.

Compared to the same 60-day period last year, 2D has has a 25 percent increase in thefts from autos, according to the MPD crime map.

Between April 21 and May 21 there were 139 thefts, compared to 103 in 2012. Between March 22 and May 21 there were 248 thefts from autos in 2013, compared to 199 in 2012.

Second District police recently made two arrests in a series of thefts from vehicles in residential areas, but will continue to deploy additional man power until more arrests are made, according to Second District Cmdr. Michael Reese.

Reese advised:

I would like to ask residents to remove electronic items and lose currency in the form coins/change from their vehicles. These perpetrators will return to areas where the aforementioned items readily available.

Though 2D as a whole has seen an increase in these thefts, Georgetown's police service area, PSA 206, saw a 39 percent decrease in thefts from autos, down to 17 this year compared to 28 last year.
