Violent Crime Down 32 Percent, Property Crime Up 7 Percent Year to Date

Across the Second District, crime trends demonstrate a decrease in violent crime and an uptick in property crime between Jan. 1 and Oct. 25 when comparing 2011 to 2010.

During the Second District Citizens Advisory Council meeting Wednesday, Second District MPD Commander Michael Reese said property crime is really the "driving crime" in the area. Between Jan. 1 and Oct. 25 violent crime is down 4 percent and property crime is up 6 percent in 2011 compared to 2010.

For Police Service Area (PSA) 206, which covers Georgetown, violent crime has decreased by 32 percent in 2011 compared to 2010. Every category of violent crime has seen some reduction, with the exception of murder. is .

Property crime in Georgetown has increased by 7 percent in 2011 compared to 2010. The biggest increase is in burglaries; there have been 65 percent more burglaries this year than last year. The neighborhood also saw a 27 percent increase in thefts from autos compared to last year.

Cmdr. Reese said recently "burglaries are down a little bit, but are still up compared to last year."

"Theft- that’s what’s hurting us right now," said Reese.
