Violent Crime is Down and Property Crime is Up

Violent crime is down throughout the Second District. That's the good news from Wednesday's Citizen's Advisory Council meeting. The bad news is property crime ticked upwards.

The statistics provided compare a one-month period from late July to late August with the same one-month period last year. (See PDF)

Commander Michael Reese said much of the violent crime the area experiences comes from bars and night clubs scattered throughout the Second Police District, from Georgetown to Dupont Circle to 14th Street.

Reese added that a large portion of the property crime comes in the form of thefts from autos, many of which involved unlocked vehicles. In Georgetown, such thefts increased by 50 percent over the previous year. Throughout the Second District the increase was 70 percent.

Another positive note was the decrease in robberies, Georgetown saw one this past month, compared to four last year.
