Wisconsin Avenue Building Condemned After Collapse

Officials are still investigating the cause of a building collapse that affected several stores on the 1400 block of Wisconsin Avenue Thursday.

Thursday afternoon the , blowing out the windows and collapsing a second-floor wall at 1426 Wisconsin Ave. Officials are still investigating the source of the collapse at 1424 Wisconsin Ave., which was initially believed to have been caused by an explosion.

D.C. Fire and EMS checked properties from 1420 to 1426 Wisconsin Ave. for gas leaks and structural issues. Personnel had to force entry to the stores because they were all unoccupied at the time of the incident.

A Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs inspector condemned the property at 1424 Wisconsin Ave.

, the retail store at 1426 Wisconsin Ave., was closed Friday and the owner reported that merchandise stored on the second floor was damaged in the wall collapse. A sign on the front of the store told customers it would remain closed "until further notice."

Duk-ki Yu, the owner of Major, told Patch in an email that he was "devastated" to have missed Black Friday.

"All in all, we just missed the biggest retail day of the season," wrote Yu.
