ANC Ponders Options for Former West Power Plant

The abandoned heating plant is owned by the federal government

The former West Heating Plant, now standing vacant near the intersection of K Street and 29th Street, is currently owned by the federal government, although several developers have expressed interest in revamping the property.

ANC2E commissioners discussed the old, yellow brick building at the group's regular meeting on Monday night. It is partially being used as a parking lot, but it is mostly abandoned.

Other groups, including the Friends of Georgetown Waterfront Park, have voiced their desire to see part of the property used as park land.

ANC Commissioner Bill Starrels said the plant used to generate steam heat for government buildings. Old industrial equipment still resides behind the closed doors, he said.

Starrels said an environmental impact study will need to be conducted on the site and the surrounding area before any decision is ultimately made.

ANC Commissioner Ron Lewis said the community will get a chance to weigh in, too.

"We have at least several months to find out what the community would like to see of the various alternatives and to communicate that," Lewis said.
