DC Special Election: AM Voting Low in Georgetown, Glover Park

Turn out was low at three precincts in Northwest DC Tuesday morning.

Turnout was low Tuesday morning in Georgetown and Glover Park for the special election for the At-large seat on the District Council. The election will fill the seat vacated when Councilman Phil Mendelson became Council Chairman.

There are seven candidates are on the ballot for the At-Large Member of the Council contest, but only six of those candidates are eigible because candidate Michael A. Brown withdrew his candidacy earlier this month.

There were no lines at any of the three precincts Patch visited Tuesday morning. At most precincts there were more volunteers for campaigns than there were voters.

At the Georgetown Library, temporary precinct #5, there were a total of 23 votes cast when Patch checked in just before 9 a.m.

"It's gonna be slow" today a precinct captain at the library told Patch.

At precinct #6 at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, 35 voters had made their selections before 9 a.m.

In Glover Park, precinct #11, 70 voters had turned out in the hours before 9 a.m. to vote for their choice among six remaining candidates in the race.

But the low turnout was not discouraging volunteers.

Will Mitchell, a volunteer for Matthew Frumin, said a low turn out might work to his candidate's favor.

"The voters we have are committed to voting," Mitchell said. Perhaps other candidates do not have voters with such conviction he suggested.
