DC Traffic Patterns and Road Closures for Memorial Day, Weekend

Between the federal holiday Monday and multiple events Saturday through Monday, there are several scheduled street closures and traffic patterns in place May 25-28.

Memorial Day and the weekend that precedes it will bring thousands of motorcyclists and other tourists to the DC area for Rolling Thunder, the National Memorial Day Parade and other scheduled events.

To accommodate several of these events the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has scheduled street closures near and around the National Mall. SATURDAY Annual Thunder Alley Rolling Thunder will kick off its Annual Thunder Alley on Saturday, May 25. The following streets will be affected on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • 22nd Street, NW between C Street and Constitution Avenue, NW. 
SUNDAY Rolling Thunder Rally

On Sunday, May 26, the Rolling Thunder Rally will take place from 10:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The following streets will be closed for this event starting at 6 a.m.:
  • Constitution Avenue, NW will be closed from 15th Street, NW to 23rd Street, NW
  • Independence Avenue, SW will be closed from 14th Street, SW to 23rd Street, SW
MONDAY National Memorial Day Parade On Monday, May 27, the National Memorial Day Parade will take place from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.  The streets along the following route will be closed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Starting from 7th Street, NW and Constitution Avenue, NW ending at 23rd Street and Constitution Avenue, NW
  • Also closed: 7th Street, NW from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue, SW
----- REVERSIBLE LANE RESTRICTION AND CONSTRUCTION ZONES Rock Creek Parkway, Canal Road and other DC area roadways with reversible lanes will not have reversible lane restrictions in place during the Memorial Day holiday. Additionally, the District Department of Transportation opened travel lanes temporarily closed for construction or maintenance work beginning at noon on Friday and continuing through noon on Tuesday, May 28. Construction zones with concrete barriers and orange barrels will remain in place, according to DDOT.
