Elected AG? Not Until 2018

The District Council passed a bill delaying the election from April 2014 to 2018.

The District Council passed a bill that would delay the election of the city's first non-appointed attorney general, moving the date from April 2014 to 2018. The final reading of the bill will not be until the fall legislative session at which point it would be sent to the mayor to be signed into law.

The bill, pushed for by Councilman Jack Evans, reflected the divide between what the council and the mayor think the position should be. Without a clear definition of the role, few candidates have stepped forward to run for the office.

“We are just not ready for this,” said council member Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), according to The Washington Post.

The delay was approved by a vote of 8 to 5.

Chairman Phil Mendelson told the Post that he planned to work with his colleagues over the summer to ensure upon final reading that the bill does not pass and that the election will be held in April.
