Email Mix-Up Reveals Navy's Plans To Dodge Reporter's FoIA Request

Find out what the agency said and how it apologized.

A reporter found out that the U.S. Navy had planned to dodge his Freedom of Information Act request regarding the mass shooting at the Navy Yard in September.

How did he find out? The Navy employees dealing with his submission accidentally sent him an internal email that showed them discussing how to avoid fulfilling his requests, according to a Huffington Post article from Wednesday.

Scott MacFarlane, an investigative reporter for NBC 4, tweeted an image of the email sent to him on Tuesday, calling it an "epic failure."

Shortly after MacFarlane saw the email, the Navy sent him an apology email and tweeted its apologies, an NBC Washington article said.

And now the Navy says it is reviewing its own FOIA office, MacFarlane tweeted on Thursday.

What do you think of this recent incident? Was it shady business or just the government doing its job? Please tell us in the comments.
