Georgetown Streetcar Meeting Tonight

Meeting is to allow public feedback on premium transit service options between Union Station and the Georgetown waterfront.

The District Department of Transportation is exploring the development of a new transit service between Union State and Georgetown and will offer information on proposed routes and various modes of transit, including a streetcar, at a public meeting Thursday.

The Union Station to Georgetown Premium Transit Service Alternatives Analysis Study examines options ranging from bus rapid transit to a streetcar as well as the routes such a service might take.

Currently a Circulator bus offers service between Union Station and Georgetown, but it experiences the same traffic delays as other vehicles during peak travel times.

“It’s not useful public transit when it takes an hour to get 3.8 miles,” Joe Sternlieb, CEO of the Georgetown Business Improvement District, said about the Circulator in a previous interview with Patch.

A recent request for proposals for a streetcar system in the District included a possible line running from Union Station to K Street under the Whitehust Freeway.

The Georgetown BID and Georgetown University are both advocating for a streetcar service wiht a route that would extend beyond the waterfront to the university main campus.

Sternlieb also want its to have its own right of way to avoid traffic problems.

At tonight's meeting, residents will be able to review possible alternatives and provide feedback to help DDOT develop a preference.

The meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, April 11, at the Carnegie Library, 801 K St. NW.
