Gray Extends Taxicab Fuel Surcharge to Trips Outside D.C.

Mayor Vincent Gray approved a $1 taxicab fuel surcharge Monday and extended the fee Wednesday to cover trips outside the District as well.

The same day to discuss the future of energy use in the U.S., D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray approved an expanded fuel surcharge for taxicabs.

Last week Gray approved a $1 fuel surcharge for taxicab rides that both originated and ended in the District. Wednesday, Gray expanded the fee to also cover trips that begin in the District and end in other jurisdictions.

The charge is intended to offset the impact of the steady rise in fuel prices on taxicab operators. It will remain in effect until July 27, 2011, unless the chairperson of the Taxicab Commission decides to end it sooner.
