Holy Trinity Receives Zoning Relief for New Addition

A small addition and a new roof in one area required approval from the Board of Zoning Adjustment.

Holy Trinity School in Georgetown received approval Tuesday from the Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) for a a proposed addition and changes to a roof structure.

The school needed a variance from its lot occupancy requirements to build the proposed addition as well as special exceptions for the private school to continue to operate in the community at its current enrollment levels.

Among other upgrades, the school plans to add a new 3rd floor addition to the upper school to accommodate four classrooms, which will require removing an existing sloping roof and installing a new one once the classrooms are expanded.

The addition increases the square feet occupied on the lot, which is what triggered the zoning review.

Additionally, the school had no existing agreement before the BZA since their existence was grandfathered. There was no existing cap on the number of students or faculty, so Holy Trinity proposed a cap at its existing numbers of 350 students and 70 faculty and staff members.

As part of that agreement the school agreed to conditions from the community (including the Advisory Neighborhood Commission, from the District Department of Transportation and the Office of Planning. These conditions limit car pool hours, staff parking and other issues that would impact the surrounding community.

The BZA approved the amended plans with its attached conditions.

According to a timeline on the Holy Trinity website, construction could begin next summer and wrap up by January 2015.
