Mayor, Community Cut Ribbon On Upgraded Volta Park Playground

The upgraded Georgetown playground features include a new PebbleFlex® safety surface, a refurbished sandbox, a new swing set and other age-specific play equipment.

Volta Park's new playground was officially opened Monday morning with a ribbon cutting by Mayor Vincent Gray and other local officials.

Though to the dozen or so children enjoying the new climbing features and other play areas, the park needed no ribbon cutting to add to their fun.

"I think it's a tremendous example of a partnership... between the community and the city," said Steven Barentzen, the president of the Friends of Volta Park.

He thanked the mayor and the city government for their cooperation and he thanked the Georgetown community, who through the Friends of Volta Park raised nearly $40,000 to purchase new equipment for the park.

Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans said he remembered bringing his children to the park to play years ago when it was in need of some serious work. 

"What we have here today is again a state of the art tot lot for our children and we're very very pleased that this got done," said Evans. 

The Volta playground is one of more than 30 citywide that are getting upgrades and makeovers as part of the Play DC initiative. The Georgetown park us the first completed in Ward 2.

According to a news release, "The Friends of Volta Park purchased and donated all of the new playground equipment and the District (DPR) funded the site demolition and prep, equipment installation and delivery, the purchase of the new swing set, safety surface, benches and the refurbished sandbox."
