Muth Competency Hearing Should Conclude This Week

Judge Russel F. Canan advised attorneys that he would like to finish the hearing, which has already lasted six days.

This week may decide whether Georgetown murder suspect Albrecht Muth is going to trial in March for the August 2011 . His competency hearing should wrap up this week in DC Superior Court.

Thursday, Judge Russel F. Canan advised attorneys that he would like them to do their best to wrap up the hearing this Tuesday and Wednesday.

Over the course of six days in the last two weeks, witnesses for the prosecution and the defense have offered their expert opinions on Muth's ability to stand trial.

As Patch reported the first day of the hearing, Canan must decide: Is Muth a lying narcissist or a delusional liar? The answer is the difference between facing a jury and remaining indefinitely in a clinical environment.

Tuesday, Dr. Mitchell Hugonnet will take the stand for the third time as Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin Lyons finishes her redirect of the doctor.

Hugonnet, called to tesify by the defense, was the first to issue a report declaring Muth competent to stand trial.

Public defender Laura Rose spent several hours last Wednesday and Thursday trying to disqualify Hugonnet as an expert and to have his report stricken from the record. When that failed, she proceeded to call into question the strength of his report, methodology and findings.

Once Hugonnet's testimony is complete, Dr. Stephen J. Lally will take the stand as a witness for the defense.
