Officers at Navy Yard Honored for Helping Stop Massacre Gunman

Officer who killed gunman honored as "Officer of the Year."

The officers on the scene of September's horrific Navy Yard massacre that saw 12 die were honored Wednesday, according to a story in The Washington Post.

The Metropolitan Police Department and the Police Foundation honored both Dorian DeSantis and Scott Williams, as well as the first team of officers who arrived at the scene.

Awards were handed out Wednesday at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater along the Southwest Washington waterfront.

DeSantis, who was shot in his police vest, killed gunman Aaron Alexis. Alexis had been pinned down between two floors on a base building in a standoff with police; police engaged in eight separate gun battles with the gunman, according to The Post.
