Officials Mark Reopening of Guy Mason Recreation Center in Glover Park

Mayor Gray, Council member Cheh and various government officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday

The Guy Mason Recreation Center is now officially reopened after Mayor Vincent Gray cut the ceremonial ribbon for the renovated community resource.

Gray called Guy Mason the "heart of the Glover Park community."

The facility received a $4.7 million top-to-bottom renovation to be ADA compliant, more energy friendly and to offer new and improved resources including classrooms, offices, art studios and support space, and a community room.

Council member Cheh said she and the entire community have "been waiting for this day" for quite some time.

As rain drops and gray skies loomed overhead, Glover Park ANC Commissioner Brian Cohen remarked that despite the weather, it was "a sunny day in Glover Park" now that the facility is reopened.

He added that the Guy Mason recreation center has been a part of the community for over 100 years and "hopefully, we'll be able to have it for 100 more."

The Mayor cut the ribbon for the occasion with the help of several children from the Department of Parks and Recreation Chevy Chase summer camp.

The mayor made quick use of the facility, hosting his weekly press briefing in one of the meeting rooms. As the meeting ended, a group of moms with small babies were seen doing yoga in one of the classroom spaces, quickly taking advantage of the renovated facility.
