Speed Limit Increase Impacts Canal Road

Canal Road is one of four DC roads to have its speed limit increased this week.

The new speed limit on Canal Road is 40 mph, increased from 35 mph. The higher speed limit applies to Canal Road from Chain Bridge to Foxhall Road.

“Residents have asked us to reconsider the posted maximums in these areas and we’re confident these changes can be made without compromising safety,” said Mayor Vicent Gray in a press release.

The changes on Canal Road and three others went into effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.

According to a news release, the District Department of Transportation "completed a review of roadways with automated speed enforcement and determined the speed limits on select roads could be increased immediately without significantly impacting safety."

DDOT will continue analyzing speedlimits throughout the District and will complete a comprehensive review by October 2014.
