Steel Plates to be Removed at Key Bridge Wednesday

Steel plates have been an unsteady pedestrian crossing to M Street for more than a week.

Steel plates that have replaced part of the sidewalk and the street in a pedestrian crosswalk from the Key Bridge to M Street will be removed and paving installed by the end of the day Wednesday.

The District Department of Transportation Director of Communications Reggie Sanders explained the project:

"This is an ongoing DDOT construction project called Permanent Count Stations, (Vehicle Count Station).  There are a series of steel plates covering a conduit trench line."

The plates, simply marked "hole" created a precarious crossing situation for pedestrians as they popped up and down as cars rode over them. Patch posted a video of them last week

According to Sanders the contractor poured concrete Tuesday to create a sub-base and the contractor plans to return Wednesday to complete the asphalt permanent paving.

Sanders said the steel plates should be gone by the end of the day Wednesday "barring any unforeseen circumstances."
