Due to heat and poor air quality, trash collection will begin an hour earlier Wednesday. Cans can be put out starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening.

The D.C. Department of Public Works’ (DPW) trash and recycling crews will begin their collections one hour earlier, at 6 a.m., Wednesday, June 1. The forecast of 90 degrees and above temperatures and unhealthy air quality prompted the move for the safety of DPW employees.

The adjusted time means residents can put their trash out for collection starting at 6 p.m. the night before collections.

Throughout the season, when the temperature is predicted to be 90 degrees or higher or the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments announces unhealthy air quality (Code Orange or Code Red days), DPW collection crews will begin their work at 6 a.m. to avoid environmental issues and to protect the quality of their health.
