Where and Why to Vote in Georgetown

Election Day 2012 is finally here. Though DC is historically a sure-thing for the Democratic presidential candidate, several tight local races are make the election one worth watching and participating in.

DC residents have turned out in force for early voting, with over 55,000 residents voting in the days prior to the election, according to a tweet from the DC Board of Elections and Ethics.

A Nov. 4 poll from the Pew Research Center shows Obama slightly leading Romney nationwide. The poll showed the president with 50 percent support among voters; Romney had 47 percent.

Though DC's vote for president might be a drop in the bucket, the uncertainty around the presidential race is keeping local politicos on edge, especially since key swing state Virginia is just on the other side of the Potomac River.

In Virginia, a poll last week from CBS News, the New York Times and Quinnipiac showed Obama with "a narrow edge in Virginia, leading Romney 49 percent to 47 percent and in Florida, where he leads 48 percent to Romney's 47 percent," according to an article in U.S. News and World Report.

“This election is really a jump ball. A number of people are very frustrated with the unsatisfactory economic performance of the last four years, and they blame Obama for that," said Stephen Farnsworth, a professor of political science at University of Mary Washington. "But there are also a lot people who aren’t that happy with Mitt Romney. They don’t feel like he understands them or has a sense of the struggle that ordinary people are going through these days.”

• Georgetown residents living in the East Village will vote at Precinct 5 at Christ Church (3116 O St., NW).
• Residents of the West Village vote at Precinct 6 at Duke Ellington School of the Arts (3500 R St., NW).
• Glover Park residents vote at Precinct 11 at the Guy Mason Recreation Center (3600 Calvert St., NW).
