WOW House: Washington Club's Patterson Mansion for $26 Million

One time location of the White House and former home of the editor of the Chicago Tribune is on the market, represented by a Georgetown brokerage.

The Patterson Mansion, a 36,470 square-foot historic property that fronts on Dupont Circle, went on the market Friday for $26 million.

Listing agency TTR Sotheby's Georgetown Brokerage calls the property a "once-in-a-century" opportunity for the right buyer. The home could be used as "an embassy, foundation or association headquarters, social club or, once again, as a personal residence."

The four-story white marble and brick mansion at 15 Dupont Circle has most recently been used by the Washington Club, which purchased the property in 1951, and rented for weddings and other events. (Note: Your editor got hitched there in October of 2009).

Built in between 1901 and 1903, the home comes with no small amount of DC history. According to the listing:

"Once owned by Eleanor “Cissy” Patterson, this distinguished residence was the center of social life for the city’s newsmakers and influential citizens during the first half of the 20th century.  In 1927, President and Mrs. Calvin Coolidge resided here while the White House was under renovation.  It was here that they welcomed Charles Lindbergh following his celebrated solo transatlantic flight."
