DC Public Schools Show Growth in Latest Test Scores

Schools in Georgetown and Glover Park had mixed results.

The results are in and DC Public Schools had a banner year, according to school leaders and Mayor Vincent Gray.
“Today, everyone can see what I’ve long known – our educators are working hard and our students are learning,” said DCPS Chancellor Kaya Henderson in a press release.

The 2013 District of Columbia Comprehensive Assessment System exam (DC CAS) results released Tuesday show the largest gains since 2008 with statewide increases of 3.9 percentage points in math and 4.1 percentage points in reading.

This year's test resulted in the highest rate of advanced students and the lowest rate of below basic students ever, according to a DCPS infographic about the results.

The tests, administered April 22-May 3 at 195 schools, measure knowledge on math, reading, science and composition.

“The 2013 DC CAS results are a strong indication that we are on the right course in our work to transform public education in the District of Columbia,” Mayor Gray said in a press release. Gray added he is "committed to accelerating" that progress through further investment in local schools.

Stoddert Elementary posted 6.2% increased in composite scores compared to the previous year.

Two schools saw a slight composite decrease in scores between 2012 and 2013.

Hyde-Addison posted a 3.5% decrease in overall scores and Hardy Middle School dropped by 1%.

Still schools in Georgetown, Glover Park and elsewhere in Wards 2 and 3 continue to perform better than many schools throughout the District.

“While the results show growth for all students, I am particularly pleased that the growth of our African-American and Hispanic students, our English-language learners, and our students with disabilities all outpaced that of their peers.”Notable gains were made in math by students with disabilities (4.6 percentage points) and reading by Hispanic students (5.3 percentage points).
