Georgetown Pitching New Campus at Walter Reed

Georgetown University and Forest City are vying for development space on the former Walter Reed campus.

Georgetown and its development team, Forest City Washington, are hoping to curry favor with of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission and neighbors of the former site of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center for a possible expansion of graduate programs and innovative non-profit partnerships.

As part of its campus plan agreement last year the university agreed to pursue its "next 100 acres" somewhere else in the city to allow for the type of expansion and growth that the will fuel the school's success.

The Georgetowner got the scoop on a statement from the University about the partnership with Forest City on pitching a university use on the Walter Reed campus.

Part of that statement is below:

The District has solicited developers to make presentations for Walter Reed. Forest City Washington has asked Georgetown University to partner on a proposal that includes exploring the possibility of expanding the university’s graduate education activities, research facilities, collaborations with private sector firms, and potentially other non profit and government entities to both accommodate growth and provide a catalyst for broader collaborations. This site has the potential to be a campus for innovation that could combine our institutional strengths with private sector, non-profit and other institutional entities, all focused on developing ideas and solutions for next generation global problem-solving.

While we are not far enough along in our master planning to determine specifically what programs and activities we would undertake at Walter Reed, we believe it is in the best interest of our institution to explore this potential partnership.

The Washington Post reports that two other developers —Roadside Development and Hines/Urban Atlantic— will be pitching their visions for the 66 acres of District-owned land available for development.

The substance of the plans has been kept under wraps to a degree, but information will become available at a public meeting scheduled for Thursday at Tifereth Synagogue on 16th Street NW.

The ANC will review the plans and provide feedback to developers. Community input will be considered when Mayor Vincent Gray and Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Victor Hoskins ultimately select the development team for the site.

The university's statement makes it clear that Walter Reed is not the only option for that future growth so desired, "You will likely hear that we are engaged in exploring various sites around the District."
