GU Calls on Alumni to Support Campus Plan

DeGioia: 'The names of hundreds of members of the Hoya family can send a message that we support strengthening Georgetown’s position as a world-class university.'

Two weeks before the final Zoning Commission hearing on the Georgetown University campus plan, University President Jack DeGioia called on alumni to show their support for the proposal to expand and grow their alma mater.

In an email sent to graduates, DeGioia called the proposal one of "modest, targeted growth opportunities," a throughout the zoning commission hearings.

The case he makes in the letter sounds much like what he might say at the Nov. 17 meeting and reflects the points made in a . DeGioia boasts the economic contributions of the university and its hospital to the greater D.C. community. He also acknowledges "the concerns of our neighbors" and touts the with new trash collection, a shuttle to M Street and additional funding for police.

DeGioia concludes, "together, the names of hundreds of members of the Hoya family can send a message that we support strengthening Georgetown’s position as a world-class university."

If the GU alumni are so concerned, perhaps they can host the off-campus student's raucous parties in their homes. Otherwise, the alumni who no longer live in the community really shouldn't have much of a say in this matter, because it does not affect their daily lives. Perhaps they can channel their energies into raising money for more on-campus dormitories?

As a Georgetown alumnus living and working in DC and VA, I think the University's last ditch effort to 'bigfoot' the process with alumni mail is high-handed, desperate, and will prove ineffective. If GU sincerely wants our input, try bringing us in sooner. Is this blast email really the best Jack DeGioia and all those VPs in Healy could come up with? Then Georgetown has already lost more than this campaign.

I got a note left on my door from GU's Office of Off-Campus Student Life asking if they could drop by in person and meet with me about local concerns. Now that I've seen their attempt to bigfoot us with their alumni, their note to me sounds like they're just saying"nice doggie" while they reach for a rock.
