Hardy Math Teacher Receives Presidential Honor

Sarah Bax was one of 97 educators honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Sarah Bax, a math teacher, was recognized this week with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) as first reported in The Georgetown Current. Bax was one of 97 recipients of the 2011 awards, which recognize exceptional K-12 mathematics and science teaching.

"These teachers are the best of the best, and they stand as excellent examples of the kind of leadership we need in order to train the next generation of innovators and help this country get ahead,” said President Obama in a prepared statement.

Awardees are invited to Washington, DC for an awards ceremony where they receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States and they attend several celebratory and career develop events. They also receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to use at their discretion.

"To me, the Presidential Award is acknowledgment that the work teachers do to help our students not only understand the content, but also be kind and confident and driven, is important and valued" said Bax in a statement on the PAEMST website.

Bax began work in DC's public schools 18 years ago and has been at Hardy for 12 of those years, according to her award biography. At Hardy she is the Mathematics Department Chairperson and the Eighth Grade Team Leader. She sponsors the Math Club and the Spring Mathematics Carnival.

The PAEMST was created by Congress in 1983 and has recognized more than 4,200 excellent educators since its inception.
