Hyde-Addison and DCPS Celebrate Strawberries and Salad Greens

The third annual event celebrates fresh, local produce

Students across D.C. public schools, including in Georgetown, enjoyed lunches and activities that featured fresh, local strawberries and salad greens Wednesday.

This is the third year for the event that hopes to prove that students will eat healthy foods if they are selected carefully and taste good.

Council member Mary Cheh spoke to a gym full of students at Maury Elementary on Capitol Hill Wednesday, calling their school a "model" for DCPS when it came to fitness and healthy eating.

"What we would like is for all the other school to be like you," said Cheh.

Maury hosts family activity nights featuring yoga and other exercises. They also have running clubs that run during lunch and after school around nearby Lincoln Park.

Maury is the only school in DCPS that offers physical education classes once a week for students in pre-K through fifth grade and is also the only school to offer a separate health class once a week for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, according to Principal Carolyne Albert-Garvey.

Council member Tommy Wells told the students that he was "proud" of their accomplishments and encouraged children to take the lessons about healthy lifestyles home to their families.

During the event three "health ambassadors" were named for having walked the most steps according to pedometers: Issac Smoker, Daivon Taylor and Nyah Beaufford.

During the special event, students visited tables outside of the school building including a yogurt station and a table with information on food origins, among others.

Inside the classroom, art students painted with "natural dyes" with art Teacher Lauren Bomba. Students bit into strawberries and then rubbed the berries on paper, using the natural colors to flood a painting.

Albert-Garvey said she was glad to host the special event with Cheh and Wells on hand.

"Today is another fine day at Maury," she said at the assembly.

Students at Hyde-Addison also had special information booths and were served the same lunch of strawberries and salad greens.
