Dear Colleagues:

I write to share with you some transitions in the Office of External Relations, and to notify you of some important personnel and structural changes that will take place this fall.

With great appreciation for all that she has done for our university and our community, Linda Greenan, Associate Vice President for External Relations, has informed us that she will retire from Georgetown at the end of September.

Linda has been a valued and loyal liaison for the University with the city and local community for almost two decades.  Since joining the Georgetown University community in 1994, she has represented the University before the District government, the City Council and countless citizen groups and business and professional organizations.  She is a respected authority on the city of Washington, its politics and its policies.  Rare was an event with the Mayor of Washington when he didn’t single out Linda for her work on behalf of Georgetown.  Most recently, Linda served as a key member of a senior leadership team that led the University in the successful passage of our campus plan.

During her tenure, Linda played a critical role in numerous projects that will have an enduring impact on the university's future.  She led the community and city review processes for the Southwest Quadrangle, St. Mary's Hall, Harbin Field, the Hariri Building, Hoya Child Care Center, and Regents Hall.  She played a pivotal role in the Canal Road entrance project, bringing to fruition in 2007 a project that had been ongoing for nearly 30 years.  She was also instrumental, working with Georgetown students, in securing their voting rights in the District of Columbia, leading to 15-years of consistent student representation on the Advisory Neighborhood Commission.

Over the course of a remarkable career, Linda has served on numerous volunteer and community activities both on campus and in the local community. She has served on the boards of the DC Chamber of Commerce and the Humanities Council and served as President of the Georgetown Business Association (2002-2006).  From 1994 to 2008, she was appointed by three different Mayors to the Board of the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission, which was the city agency responsible for returning Major League Baseball to the city and for the construction of Nationals Stadium.  She currently serves on the board of the Washington Convention and Sports Authority, which manages the city's convention center, Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, the DC Armory and the Carnegie Library.

I am deeply grateful to Linda for her unwavering commitment and service to Georgetown University, our neighbors and our entire city.  I join her many friends at the University and across the city in thanking her and wishing her the very best. I look forward to celebrating Linda’s accomplishments in the weeks ahead.

In order to continue the good work that Linda and her colleagues in External Relations have done, and to support the next phase of the University’s strategic engagement with District and the institutional planning on which we are embarking, we are creating a new Office of Community Engagement. This new office, which will be part of the Office of Public Affairs, will coordinate the University’s engagement with the District of Columbia, participate in institutional planning, serve as the primary contact for the Georgetown Community Partnership and assist in the development of the 2017 campus plan.

I am pleased that Lauralyn Lee, a trusted member of our university community for nearly a decade, will lead this office as the Associate Vice President of Community Engagement and Strategic Initiatives.  In this new role, Lauralyn will be responsible for building and facilitating internal and external collaborations to support the University’s strategic engagement with the District of Columbia.  She will be deeply engaged in institutional planning to ensure that the University’s engagement with the District is aligned with our strategic planning priorities and she will support the University’s community service and civic engagement initiatives.  Lauralyn will bring the same level of skill and commitment to this new role that she has brought to her work in the Counsel’s Office and the Office of Public Affairs.

Please join me in thanking Linda for her many year of service to the University.

Sincerely,

John J. DeGioia
