National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalists Include 14 D.C. Students

Students now compete for a slice of $2.5 million in scholarship awards.

Local high school seniors who excelled in testing last year will be competing as National Achievement Scholarship semifinalists.

The National Achievement Scholarship was established in 1964 to recognize "academically promising black students" throughout the country and to award many of them scholarships.

All 1,600 2014 semifinalists are eligible to compete for 800 National Achievement Scholarship awards worth $2.5 million. The money will be awarded in spring 2014 by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Semifinalists are designated within geographic regions and are the highest-scoring program entrants in the states that make up each region, according to a press release.
