Readers Needed at Local Schools Nov. 1-2

Stoddert and Hyde-Addison Elementary schools need readers to help with activities related to homeless awareness.

Two local schools are hosting help the homeless mini-walks and the Georgetown Ministry Center needs volunteers to read books to children about homelessness prior to the official walk.

Stoddert Elementary's (4001 Calvert St. NW) event is Thursday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. and Hyde-Addison's (3219 O St. NW) event is Friday at 9 a.m. Reading is allotted about 40 minutes at each school and the walks follow the reading. Volunteers are welcome to join the walk after reading.

The biggest demand is for readers is Thursday at Stoddert, there are 17 slots that need to be filled. Hyde-Addison needs an additional six volunteers for Friday.

In an email Wednesday, GMC's Gunther Stern explained what volunteering entails, "You will read a book to a class of kids (pre-k to grade 5). We have the books. The books all deal with a homeless topic. You can then ask the kids questions. 'Why do you think the boy and his dad have to live in the airport?' for instance."

Stern said the kids surprise him every year with their smart questions and he added, "I can almost guarantee you will enjoy yourself.
