The Big Chili: from Playground Fundraiser to La Maison Francaise

Stoddert Elementary School fundraiser evolves from potluck chili event to catered soiree at an embassy.

Stoddert Elementary's Big Chili fundraiser is a long-standing tradition to support the local school. It began in the 1980s as a potluck chili cookoff in a playground; this year the Big Chili will be a catered event at the Embassy of France. The goal is to raise between $20 and $30 thousand for the school.

This grownups-only event brings together parents, teachers, neighbors and area leaders for a night of food, live music and auctions. The event still features chili, but it is catered by Hard Times Cafe rather than being homemade. "It's much more fancy when they do it, as befits the French Embassy," said Brian Cohen, a Stoddert parent and event co-chair.

Live music for the evening will be provided by local band, Looking for Lester. A Stoddert Dad is a member of the band, of course.

Funds raised through ticket sales and auction items support the school in ways ranging from academic needs to basic classroom supplies for teachers. The school library relies heavily on the fundraising efforts of parents. Additionally, Cohen said funds support "the Stanford EPGY math program that many teachers in the school use to help with the curriculum."

Purchase your tickets online for the April 3 event and consider donating items ranging from a weekend at your vacation house to a themed dinner for six at your home.
