Two GU Students Win Marshall Scholarships

Two Georgetown students were among 35 recipients of the 2013 Marshall Scholarship, which finances study at United Kingdom higher education institutions.

Georgetown, Harvard and the United States Naval Academy were the only institutions with two scholarship recipients this year.

Shea Houlihan, a current senior in the Walsh School of Foreign Service, and Benjamin Buchanan, a 2011 GU bachelor's degree holder and a current student in the security studies master's program, bring the total all-time number of GU recipients to 21.

Houlihan of El Paso, Texas is an international politics major. He plans to pursue graduate degrees in social research methods and migration studies at the University of Sussex, according to a news release from the University.

“While I do not know exactly what my career path will look like, I do know that I will continue to work with these populations,” Houlihan said about forced migrants and refugees in a prepared statement.

Benjamin Buchanan of New York, N.Y., will use the scholarship to get a doctoral degree either in war studies at King’s College London or in Information, Communication and the Social Sciences from the University of Oxford, according to a news release from the University.

“Tasked with geopolitics, states must interrelate the political, the economic, the military, and the domestic in the strategic assessment of cyberspace,” Buchanan said in a prepared statement about his academic interests. “This calculus is now the focus of my energy.”
