College Park Day 2011

Join the City of College Park in celebrating the city’s rich diversity at College Park Day!

Hop on one of two free shuttles to the event:  free parking and shuttle at the former 94th Aero Squadron 5240 Paint Branch Parkway;  or the free shuttle from University of Maryland Stamp Student Union and come on over for some great food, good music, and fun for the whole family!

Famous DC Food Trucks The Fojol Brothers – a traveling culinary carnival will feature savory delights from around the globe, and Curbside Cupcakes will bring cupcake bliss to all of your senses!  Our food area will also feature award winning BBQ, Hot Dogs for the kids as well as delicious pupusas.

Are you a Harry Potter Fan?  Watch the Quidditch exhibition on the grassy pitch by our own Maryland Flying Wizard Turtles!  Maybe you are a budding tennis superstar?  Head on over and hit some balls around at one of our sponsors, the Tennis Center at College Park’s mobile court at the event!

Be sure to stop by our sponsor’s booths such as the Capital One Bank – and get information to start your kids college savings account and other financial information, or by one of over 40 community or vendor booths and buy some unique items or get some literature from our community partners!

Check out the happenings in the College Park Community Center:  Lakeland Community Heritage Project  will be showing a movie; the University of Maryland Extension Expanded Food and Nutrition Program will be doing a seminar: “Introduction to the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program and MyPlate” ; and of course we will be exhibiting the Elementary School Poster contest winners for “My Home, My Community”.  We’ll have roller skating in the gym on the smooth floor from 1pm – 2pm!

On stage we’ll have a variety of entertainment for the eyes and the ears!  Among the list of performers at this year’s event will be: the Air Force ROTC Drill Team, Making Moves Dance CollectiveChinese Bible Church Martial Arts Group and Taiko Drummers, New Chicago Dance Studio, our own College Park band “Edgewood”, and others!

We’ll also have a “green living” area that will help put you on the path to reduce your carbon footprint and bring sustainability to your home and the community.  Behnke’s nursery will be talking about their Bay Safe program, handing out coupons to get a discount at their nursery and other surprises!  Maybe you want to purchase a rain barrel to capture water for your garden next summer from Roll out the Rain Barrels; or stop by and talk with our very own Department of Public Works about composting or their wood mulch program and other ways to be Green in College Park!

Bring the kids so they can have fun on the giant inflatable castle or obstacle course, play some ring toss and get their faces painted.  Ever want to try on firefighters gear or check out the cool officers on Segway’s?

You can do it all at this year’s festival!

Free University of Maryland/Pepsi bags will be distributed to the first 500 guests!
