Free and Inexpensive Yoga Classes

Come back to center with a variety of indoor and outdoor yoga classes.

September marks National Yoga Month, and if you have been dying to get into downward dog but haven't had the time to search for studios, or are strapped for cash, Georgetown has a variety of free and inexpensive yoga classes guaranteed to bring you back to center.

Yoga in the Garden

Sabina Grewal leads a small group of around five people to practice yoga on the spacious south lawn of the Tudor Place Historic House and Garden. The lawn has a picturesque view of the house and is a tranquil reprieve from busy P Street. Following the class, visitors are welcome to explore the 5 ½ -acre garden north of the house. The class is offered each Friday at 10:00 a.m. and will continue through the beginning of October, weather permitting. Please bring a yoga mat.

Monu Harnal is a personal yoga teacher, though she generally goes to "the sacred spaces" of her client's homes and specializes in one-on-one yoga sessions in the D.C. area, she occasionally offers free classes. On Sept. 21 at 7:00 p.m., she will lead a large group at Waterfront Park (between Cecil Place and Water Street) on the grass under nearly full moonlight (two days before full moon). Monu, who began the yoga classes at Tudor Place, says, "Georgetown is the prettiest place" to practice yoga, and being near water offers serenity and a very good energy flow because "prana," or vital energy, is released into the air. No need to register, but be sure to arrive about a half hour before to secure a spot, and bring a light jacket.

Cost: FREE; one-on-one sessions are $120, and she also can arrange small groups for 5-7 people. Contact: (703) 851-8518, www.illumeyoga.com.

Social Yoga

For larger classes that meet regularly, visit the Down Dog Yoga studio, where each Friday at 4PM they offer discounted community classes. The studio typically attracts 30-50 people, so arrive early. If you are attending college and want to meet collegiate fellows, these classes are particularly popular among Georgetown University and George Washington University students. Stay tuned for college student-geared classes, where power vinyasa flow (hot yoga) will be taught in 99-degree room temperature.

Cost: Community classes are $6 for students, $10 dollars for non-students; towel and mat rentals are $2 each. Contact: (202) 965-YOGA (9642), www.downdogyoga.com.

For another large gathering of yoga enthusiasts, join a class at Lululemon every Wednesday and Sunday at noon. This class draws a variety of people such as students, professionals leaving work early, neighbors and even tourists. The class takes place in a large studio on the second floor above the store in front of large windows looking out onto M St. Yoga mats are provided for free, and each class features an instructor from a different local studio. Registration is not required.

Cost: FREE: Contact: www.lululemon.com, (202) 333-1738.
