Saturday, Georgetown joined six other schools in a mass exodus from Big East basketball. The schools forming their own league are Georgetown, St. John’s, Villanova, DePaul, Marquette, Seton Hall and Providence, according to the AP.
"We've been associated with the BIG EAST Conference since its beginning in 1979 and all of the decisions that we make are never taken lightly. There has been thoughtful consideration to our membership in the BIG EAST Conference, what that has meant to us, Georgetown University, and they are never easy decisions, but we thought it was the right time to make this decision and move forward with the other six non-football playing members of the conference," Director of Athletics Lee Reed said in a prepared statement.
The seven schools were each members of the BIG EAST that did not play major college football, according to the AP.

"The common philosophical link is not religion, it's basketball," Georgetown Basketball Coach John Thompson III said.
