Georgetown Women's Player Throws Shoe at Shot; Video Goes Viral

Shoe throwing 'not a rule in the rule book'

During the Georgetown-Richmond game on Friday Nov.8, Georgetown Women's Basketball player Shayla Cooper earned praises for her performance, but the Freshman forward is gaining the most attention from her potentially shot-blocking move: throw a shoe at it.

The ESPN video of Cooper's shoe block has received more than 100,000 views since its Wednesday posting.

Despite the attention given to Cooper's play, game officials let it go unnoticed, because who knows what to do with shoe throwing in basketball? Here's what the Associated Press wrote in an article about NCAA rule enforcement:

"...Shayla Cooper lost her shoe early in the second half and tried to block a Spiders' 3-pointer by throwing her sneaker at the ball. She missed and so did the officials, who didn't call a foul on the play. Or even a "soletending" violation."

Associated Press quoted Debbie Williamson, secretary-rules editor for NCAA women's basketball, as saying that shoe throwing is "not a rule in the rule book. It's an unsporting act... it should have been an unsportsmanlike foul."
