Lawyers Have Heart 10K Returns to Georgetown, June 11

The 21st annual Lawyers Have Hear 10k race and 3k fun walk will return to Georgetown Saturday morning.

The Lawyers Have Heart 10k will bring some 5,500 participants to the Georgetown waterfront for a race along the , Saturday, June 11, to benefit the American Heart Association (AHA).

The race, the largest 10k in Washington, begins at 31st and K Streets at 7:30 a.m. and is followed by a party at the Washington Harbour.

Approximately 150 Washington law firms participate each year, several are based in Georgetown. Firms send teams who raise funds to support the (AHA). The top fundraisers win the Biggest Heart award, a coveted title.

Hilary Sama, a development director at the AHA, said about 50 percent of participants are from the legal comuity, the rest are open slots, filled by familes and people who just like to run. 

Sama said the organization loves having the race in Georgetown because the "both businesses and residents have always been really welcoming of our race and accommodating."

The course along the C&O Sama added is "very flat and really scenic. The runners really enjoy it."

After 21 years, the race has developed its own traditions. A tribute wall at the Washington Harbour allows loved onese to write a note to someone they've lost to heart disease and runners can pick up a tribute bib to wear for someone they are honoring with their race.

At the starting line, the event mascot, "Probono," a big brief case, kicks off the race.

Post-race a party at the Washington Harbour features food, including snocones, and sponsored booths handing out free takeaways.

The race is still open for registrants, who can register at Pacers in Logan Circle during packet pickup Thursday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m or
Friday, June 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Day-of registration is possible between 6 and 7 a.m. at 3000 K St.
