Let Bryce Harper have a break

Rookie would benefit from quiet downtime with family

There is at present a fixated effort to get Nationals outfielder into the All-Star game in Kansas City next week. The Twitter hashtag partly driving the effort is trending. Even Senator Harry Reid, a fellow Nevadan who recently used Harper's now famous "that's a clown question. Bro." riposte to a silly media person in Canada, is busily promoting Harper's appearance. Let me say straight up I think Bryce is an amazing person who has amazing baseball talent. I'm going to try my hardest to get him to come to Stoddert and inspire fifth-graders. I have two Harper T-shirts and would agree that he is the best thing since sliced bread. BUT, the love affair with BH is just beginning in Washington. He has recently said he'd love to spend his entire career here, which came as a pleasant surprise to me. We all have plenty of time to see him in the Midsummer Classic. He has also said that he'd prefer to go back to Vegas and spend time with his family. He would benefit more by getting a break from the game and the hype building around him. He's 19, and it must be challenging to have all the attention that is building. He needs to stay grounded through this initial phase and being with his family in familiar surroundings would serve that purpose better than serving the fan's interests. Let the guy have a well deserved break. I'd rather see a more refreshed post-season Harper than a more worn, more hyped Harper next week.
