The recent tragedy in Boston reminded us all of the dangerous world in which we live.
Yesterday, in Pittsburgh, 28,000 marathoners refused to be cowed by the events of April 15th. Watching them run by our bed and breakfast on the North Shore gave me a patriotic surge not unlike the one I felt driving across the country in the days after September 11, 2001.
People came from near and far to participate in the event and many had some reference to Boston on their clothing. All had Boston in their hearts as they ran and walked through the Steel City.

What a great nation. Imagine what could happen if we ever regain a sense of unity and purpose around our most troubling issues such as food deserts, increasing inequality, and the culture of violence.
