Stoddert Peacebuilders Show Solidarity With Max's Best

Young Activists Make Their Presence (and Opinion) Felt in Glover Park

Fifteen motivated and energetic fifth-graders marched over to Wisconsin Avenue on Thursday afternoon to show support for Max Keshani, owner of Max's Best.  Max came out to greet the supporters and teared up a bit as he thanked them for their spirited presence.

He then invited them inside for a complimentary scoop of ice cream.

Max's Best has recently had its lease terminated by Ruppert Real Estate, owners of the Glover Park commercial space in which his business has operated since 1990.

Stoddert Peacebuilders is a group of students at the school who care about making the world a better place by planting "seeds of peace" whenever and wherever possible.

The students spent a part of the day making their signs and practicing chants such as "Ho, Ho, Hey, Hey, Max's Best has got to stay" and "What do we want?  Max's Best!  When do we want it?  Forever!"  The signs were hung up on the wall of the shop and are now on display.

Max was still visibly moved as the rally ended around 3:45pm.  He gave your correspondant a heartfelt hug and said "How can they take someone's life away?"

The students were involved in lessons before and after the event which emphasized the reason for the rally, which was to support Max.  They also learned that their opinion of what is happening is just that: an opinion.  The larger issues involving other businesses and landlords are highly complicated and would require much more information to understand.

Finally, the students learned that there is a concept in economics called "creative destruction" in which businesses survive and fail due to numerous competitive pressures and other variables.
