Georgetown Father's Day 8K Promises Competition, Fun

The 4th annual Georgetown Running Co. 8K will take over the C&O Canal briefly Sunday evening.

Let dad burn off that Father's Day brunch and get out some of his competitive spirit in the 4th annual Georgetown Father's Day 8K organized by the Georgetown Running Co. (GRC). The race kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on the towpath of the C&O Canal at Potomac and Grace Streets, NW.

"The event has really developed into a family-friendly evening in Georgetown with fathers racing the 8K with their sons and daughters, kids running the Kid’s Kilometer, and everyone celebrating with a well-deserved Georgetown Cupcake at the finish,” Race Director Patrick Murphy said in a news release.

The event is the running company's main fundraiser. The funds allow members a small stipend to travel to professional competitions and national championships to represent the team and regional running scene, according to the release.

“I'm looking forward to another great event on Sunday,” GRC Racing Team Coach Jerry Alexander said in a statement. “It's a low-key but competitive event in a beautiful setting, and it's always a fun night for everyone.”

But it's not all competitive. After you burn a few calories in the race, you can reward yourself with free cupcakes provided by Georgetown Cupcakes and a happy hour with beer and appetizer specials at Chadwicks, 3205 K St. NW.

Register online at www.fathersday8k.com. On race day, registration will held at the Georgetown Running Co., 3401 M St. NW, from 2 to 4 p.m., and at the start/finish at Potomac and Grace Streets from 5 to 6:15 p.m.
