National Ice Cream Day: How Are You Celebrating?

Ice cream, gelato, sorbet and more - Georgetown and Glover Park have a lot to offer on National Ice Cream Day.

Sunday, July 21 is National Ice Cream Day and in Alexandria's sweltering heat, it couldn't have come at a better time.

Ice cream-lover President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July as the frozen confection’s special day.

In the proclamation, Reagan called for all people of the United States to consider ice cream with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.”

Vanilla remains the most popular flavor among consumers followed by mint chocolate chip and cookies and cream, according to an International Dairy Foods Association 2012 survey.

Around town, here are a few places you can sample the good stuff:

Max's Best Ice Cream - 2416 Wisconsin Ave. NW - It looks like this will be the last ever National Ice Cream day for Max's, which will end its lease in Glover Park in October after 20 years. Get your homemade ice cream fill now while you still can. 

Ben & Jerry’s -  3135 M St., NW – The national chain offers sorbets, smoothies and of course Cherry Garcia and Chunky Monkey among many other unique flavors.

Dolcezza 1560 Wisconsin Ave., NW - Switch it up and enjoy your "ice cream" with a European flare. 

Haagen-Dazs Ice Cream Shops - 3120 M St., NW - Try this M Street favorite to get your vanilla fix. 

Hershey's Ice Cream - 3151 K St., NW - Tear the kids away from the waterfront fountain long enough to get them a cone of their favorite flavor!

Thomas Sweet Ice Cream - 3214 P St NW - President Barack Obama visited this local ice cream shop for a Father's Day treat several years ago. They must be doing something right!
