M Street Cycle Track Coming in October

The protected bike lane would run westbound on M Street, ending in Georgetown.

The M Street Cycle Track could be installed beginning in October, depending on the weather, according to the District Department of Transportation (DDOT).

The cycle track will feature both a painted buffer and flexible bollards to separate cyclists from drivers and to prevent vehicles from illegally parking in the bike lane.

The M Street cycle track would create a westbound bike lane from 15th Street to 29th Street in NW.

Resurfacing and installation for a the eastbound cycle track on L Street NW took place over the course of about three weeks last October. The track runs east from New Hampshire Avenue to 12th Street, NW.

Though the L and M Street tracks were originally supposed to be built at the same time, DDOT later decided to build the L Street track first and to wait on the M Street track. DDOT has studie the impacts on the L Street track to help implement any necessary adjustments to the design when the M Street track goes in.

One such change is that the bike lane will be closest to the curb in most areas, with parking also separating the lane from vehicular traffic lanes. You can see the proposed design here

DDOT the BID members and staff (Downtown and Golden Triangle), individual property owners, and building tenants met during the winter and spring of 2013 to discuss impacts from construction and the later existence of the M Street project.
