Shutdown Possible for 3 Red Line Stations

Leaks in Metro tunnels could cause the stations to be shut down for repairs.

Water leaks could cause three red line Metro stations, including Friendship Heights, to close for repairs.

Bethesda and Medical Center stations could also close for more than a month, according to a News4 report. The station obtained video showing rusted and dripping pipes and cracks on walls. The red line is Metro's busiest, according to the report.

However, a Metro official stressed Friday in a Washington Postreport that any permanent fix for the problem could be at least a year away, and said it's “too early to know” if a closure would be necessary.

Part of the leak problem is caused by the area's geography, according to the Post report. A permanent fix would require relining the tunnel, according to the News4 report.
