Georgetown Volunteer Block Watch Captains Meet

Citizen Block Watch captains gather and are briefed on crime statistics and safety tips.

Volunteer Block Watch captains met on Wednesday night to review duties and assignments. It was also an opportunity to meet each other and exchange ideas about how to make the residential streets of Georgetown safe from crime.

Old and new block captains were welcomed by (CAG) Executive Director Betsy Cooley. Block Watch Coordinator Diane Colasanto introduced guests and guards Tesfaye Terefe and Donovan Carmichael of Securitas.

Hedgecock has over 20 years on theand has served in all eight city wards. He has been with PSA 206 for about 18 months and is delighted with Georgetown's commitment to reducing crime. He emphasized the importance of residents reporting suspicious behavior by describing a recent arrest that was a result of an alert citizen who reported seeing an individual jump in a cab on Prospect Street with a crowbar and bulging rucksack.

Hedgecock also handed out year-to-date crime statistics for Georgetown showing a drop in violent crimes like homicide, sexual assault and robbery. Violent crime is down about 45 percent from same time 2010.

Unfortunately the area has seen a significant spike in property crime. Property crime including burglary, retail theft, theft from vehicles, etc. has risen 21 percent year-to-date. Lt Hedgecock reminded the audience to limit crimes of opportunity by keeping doors and windows locked, and not to leave keys out under mats and flower pots.

Block Watch captains are asked to encourage their neighbors to provide them with contact information so that the block captain can disseminate crime alerts and other time-sensitive information. The volunteers can also pass on safety tips, crime trends and even garbage collection information.
