The Taste of Georgetown to Bring Good Food and Good Deeds to the Streets

The annual event will take place this Saturday.

Start working up an appetite, because the 18th Annual Taste of Georgetown is this Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“This is a great way for us to recognize that we’re all one community and be able to support a great event,” said Stacy Kerr, a spokeswoman for Georgetown University, one of the Taste’s local sponsors.

The event will be held on Wisconsin Avenue, between M and K streets, and will feature over 30 restaurants. All the profits will be donated to , a neighborhood charity that facilitates homeless assistance programs.

“It’s a great way to raise money for a local community charity,” said Debbie Young, marketing manager for the Georgetown Business Improvement District.

The Taste will include a wine, ale and spirits pavilion, which will feature over 25 craft beers, six wines and three specialty cocktails. Other event highlights include face painting and balloon sculptures for children, and live jazz from Blues Alley.

New this year is the First Annual Pumpkin Food Fight, in which chefs from Georgetown will battle against one another to see who can create the best dish spotlighting pumpkin. Entries include several quirky interpretations of the fall favorite, such as pumpkin tamales and turkey pumpkin chili. The gourd-centric dishes will be judged by a trio Georgetown notables, one of whom is Patch’s own .

The Taste of Georgetown was started by nearly two decades ago, as a way to support the Georgetown Ministry Center. Originally a bake sale, it has since grown tremendously. This year, the Taste’s organizers hope to raise upwards of $40,000 for the center and estimate that over 10,000 people will attend the event.

The Georgetown Ministry Center provides much-needed services to Georgetown’s homeless. They offer psychiatric and physical healthcare, an overnight shelter during the winter months and a clubhouse-style homeless center, which includes phone availability and computer access.

But despite the importance of their work, the center is in dire need of community support.

“We really need every bit that we get,” said Gunther Stern, the center’s executive director.

The 18th Annual Taste of Georgetown is more than just a day of deliciousness — it’s an opportunity for the community to do a world of good.

Tickets for the Taste can be purchased online or on-site at the event.
