March on Washington, Old Fashion Competition and More

The 50th Anniversary March on Washington Realize the Dream March and Rally:
 Gather on the National Mall Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The march begins at the Lincoln Memorial and will make its way over to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial for a brief ceremony.

Block Party at Bourbon Steak: Bourbon Steak at the Georgetown Four Season's Hotel is hosting a good old fashion block party, featuring, what else, Old Fashions. For $70 per person (includes tax and gratuity) you can enjoy food, drink and lots of Old Fashions. Top mixologists from the city's most popular cocktail spots — like The Gibson and The Occidental — will be mixing up their version of Old Fashions in a competition. The party starts at noon Saturday. Tickets are available online.

DCPS Beautification Day: Do your part to ready our local schools for the new school year. Volunteers are needed throughout the city to weed, plant flowers, paint and do odd jobs at neighborhood schools. Sign up online and get ready to roll up your sleeves Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Alexandria and the War of 1812 is in the spotlight as historians guide visitors through the difficulties encountered by Americans during what has been termed “America’s Second War for Independence.” Topics such as the burning of Washington, the U.S. Navy and the role of Alexandrians in the war will be discussed. Lectures and tours of Carlyle House are included in the admission fee of $10 per adult and $5 per child ages 5-12. Lectures at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., tours 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The lecture program will take place next to Carlyle House, 121 N. Fairfax St. in Old Town Alexandria, Va. at the Bank of America building.
