Crews filmed a Washington Nationals commercial at Rose Park Thursday.
Actors, camera crews and a film trailer took over Rose Park for part of the morning Thursday. The Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) was filming scenes for a new Washington Nationals promo. MASN is a regional sports network owned by the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles that carries both Nats and Orioles games live. A group of young boys in red, white and blue attire and Nats baseball hats were playing a game of pick-up baseball with their "dads" while the "moms" cheered them on. If not for the film crews with their cameras running along side the players, it might have been a typical afternoon at Rose Park. David Dunning, Rose Park President, helped secure the park for MASN. Eric Hunsaker the art director for the shoot (and …

Brown, known as the 'Godfather of Go-Go', was a native Washingtonian.
Chuck Brown, the “Godfather of Go-Go," will sing no more. Brown died Wednesday at age 75 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Brown was a native Washingtonian and a leader in the creation and evolution of Go-Go as a subgenre of funk music. “Go-go is D.C.’s very own unique contribution to the world of pop music, and Chuck Brown was regarded as Go-go’s creator and, arguably, its most legendary artist,” Mayor Gray said in a press release. “Today is a very sad day for music lovers the world over, but especially in the District of Columbia. Brown was hospitalized for pneumonia and died from complications from sepsis. "His musical legacy will live on, not only in the District street bearing his name, or each time a home run is scored at …
The Georgetown school won a $3,500 grant from Loews to start a student-run vegetable garden.
Hardy Middle School sixth-graders got their hands dirty Wednesday and they didn't have to go downtown to the Thompson Building to do it. Thanks to a $3,500 grant from Loews, funds raised through a Sock Hop dance and the time donated by parents and teachers, Hardy Middle School has its very own fledgling community garden. Students planted tomato, pepper and other seeds in newly constructed plots on the school's grounds. "Learning doesn't happen just inside four walls of the classroom," science teacher Britni Whitty told her class of 20-some odd students. The vegetable garden follows on the heels of a wetland area created last fall. Through the District Department of the Environment, Hardy received a grant to build a new wetlands area in a …

Washington, D.C. is among the most well-read cities in the country, according to rankings released Tuesday by Amazon. The company compiled data of all book, magazine and newspaper sales in both print and Kindle format since June 1, 2011, to determine the top 20 most well-read U.S. cities. The statistics are per capita and the rankings include only municipalities of more than 100,000 residents. Washington, D.C. moved up to No. 9 after placing No. 14 a year ago. The D.C. region has a slew of bibliophiles, with three Virginia jurisdictions joining Washington in the top 20; Arlington placed seventh and Richmond came in at No. 20. Georgetown's access to bookstores has dwindled recently, most notable with the departure of Barnes and Noble. But…

Mayor Vincent C. Gray and D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown plan to renovate 24 playgrounds across the city.
Rose Park's playground is one of 24 playgrounds across the city slated for renovations under a new plan from Mayor Vincent C. Gray and D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown. "Renovating these playgrounds is an investment in the well-being of our children, and I can think of nothing worthier" said Gray in a prepared statement. Rose Park is one of only two Ward 2 parks selected for the renovation. Nearby Ward 3 will have five playgrounds upgraded. The Friends of Rose Park are already undertaking an upgrade of the neighborhood park, paid for with private funds. Plans to upgrade the existing paths, replace railroad timbers, increase the flag poll plaza, add seating, plant trees and more are underway.

Tari, a consignment boutique on at 1525 Wisconsin Ave., has until August 31 to resolve zoning and Commission on Fine Arts problems with a new two story rear addition that has already been built. Otherwise, the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) will revoke the permit, which the agency has since determined was issued in error. Tuesday the Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) met to discuss an appeal by neighbors to that erroneously-granted permit, but decided to delay a hearing until September 25 in consideration of the DCRA August 31 deadline. The Examiner: Incident happened Tuesday morning on the Red Line.
This probably isn't what Metro had it mind when it adopted the slogan "Metro opens doors." The transit agency says it is looking into why the doors of a Red Line train traveling in the direction of Shady Grove opened while the train was moving Tuesday morning, The Washington Examiner reported. The incident occurred just after 9 a.m. in a tunnel between the Van Ness and Tenleytown stations, The Examiner reported. No one was injured. The two cars on which doors opened were taken out of service, Metro spokesman Dan Stessel told The Examiner. The cars are among the oldest in Metrorail's fleet, The Examiner reported. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, a pro-choice Catholic, will be a featured speaker at the 2012 commencement this weekend.
The Cardinal Newman Society and the D.C. Archdiocese have called on Georgetown University to recant its invitation to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to speak at the 2012 commencement ceremonies this coming weekend. Georgetown is the oldest Catholic university in America. "Now that the Church is under attack by an unconstitutional mandate, Georgetown is honoring its architect HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius," declares the Cardinal Newman Society in a new YouTube video set to dramatic music. The society does not parse its words, saying that Georgetown University has "drifted from the faith," is "undermining" the church and that the Sebelius invitation is a"betrayal." Last week an editorial in The Catholic Standardrchdiocese of Washington’s …
